Caveguy told Kerinj to start updating the Presence profile. His point was that being the blank white page does not automatically establish dialetheia or an absolute beyond being where all logic converges into one essence. If the scans only establish a canvas role, then the honest classification is MW-Pe, the Medium White Page Entity. This is a literal PABC term for the page-as-medium role, not a proposal for some future thread. It describes what the evidence establishes, not every metaphysical property someone wants to attach to it.
Kerinj replied that Grant Morrison’s idea went beyond the representation or embodiment of a canvas. Kerinj described the Overvoid as a metafictional substratum of DC reality, comparing it to the One or the ineffable in Damascius, and argued that the Presence, Source, and Overvoid are expressions of one underlying reality.
Caveguy’s reply was simple: “Is this metafictional substratum dialetheic?” If that is the claim, show the scans and establish the link to the whole. He offered Tier 0-C as the most generous PABC classification for the Presence as an absolute ground, comparable in broad philosophical function to natura naturans or ipsum esse subsistens. Tier 1-S stays rejected on the current argument.
First, what dialetheia actually means
Dialetheia is the view that at least one contradiction is true. In simple terms, there is some proposition P for which both P and not-P hold. That is stronger than saying something is mysterious, ineffable, beyond ordinary language, or hard to understand.
A character being called “beyond logic” does not automatically prove dialetheia. It might mean ordinary concepts fail to describe the character. It might be nonduality. It might be poetic language. It might be an inconsistent description across different stories. Those possibilities need to be distinguished before anyone starts handing out the highest tier like free candy.
Classical logic generally treats contradictions as dangerous because of the principle of explosion: from a contradiction, any proposition can be derived. Paraconsistent logic rejects unrestricted explosion, allowing inconsistent information to be examined without making every claim follow. But being able to analyze a fictional entity using paraconsistent logic does not prove the entity itself is dialetheic. The framework we use to analyze a story is not automatically a property of the story.
The four readings
1. Anatomical: is the contradiction actually connected?
The anatomical reading asks whether the alleged contradiction really concerns the same entity, in the same relevant sense. It is not enough to find one scan saying the Presence is everything and another saying something exists beyond it. Are both statements about the total Presence, or is one about an avatar, a manifestation, a narrator, or a different continuity?
The submitter must show where the claims meet. If one passage describes the Source and another describes the Overvoid, explain why they are identical or why one represents the other. If the apparent contradiction disappears once the aspects are separated, then dialetheia has not been established. Don’t slap two quotes together and call it a day. That’s not a scan chain, that’s a collage.
2. Metaphorical: what does the canvas language mean?
A blank page can represent a medium, pre-creation, possibility, or the background on which a story is written. Those interpretations can overlap, but they are not automatically identical. The canvas metaphor can support a metafictional reading without proving that the entity transcends every possible ontology or that all contradictions are true of it.
“Absolute,” “ineffable,” “formless,” and “beyond being” are also not magic words. They have technical histories in philosophy and theology, but a comic can use them poetically or in a setting-specific way. Read the context. If the page is just the surface upon which the narrative appears, MW-Pe is the narrowest supported claim. If the story establishes that this medium is also the ontological ground of all creation, then argue for that stronger conclusion separately.
3. Synecdochical: does one aspect stand for the whole?
Synecdoche is when a part represents a whole, or a whole represents a part. Kerinj’s argument is that the Presence, Source, and Overvoid are expressions of the same underlying reality. If the canon supports that, it may justify treating them as aspects of one entity. But sharing an underlying source does not automatically mean every aspect expresses every property of the totality in the same way.
“The Presence appears as the Light of Creation” does not automatically mean every property of that expression describes the full Presence without qualification. Likewise, “the Overvoid is the canvas” does not automatically prove that every metaphysical statement about God applies to the canvas in exactly the same sense. Show the identity relation, then show what properties actually carry across it.
4. Ontological: what kind of thing is it?
The ontological reading asks what the entity is, not merely what it looks like or what it can do. Is the Overvoid a medium, a conscious void, the source of creation, or an absolute ground upon which reality depends? Those are different claims, and the evidence must establish the relationship between them.
Natura naturans roughly means “nature naturing,” or nature considered as productive activity. Ipsum esse subsistens means “subsistent being itself,” a phrase from classical theistic metaphysics. These comparisons can help explain Tier 0-C, but similarity to a philosophical concept does not prove that a fictional entity literally has every feature of that concept.
A being can be the ground of one fictional cosmology without automatically being the ground of every conceivable reality. Creating worlds, manipulating laws, or existing outside a narrative does not by itself establish dialetheia. Ontology, ability, and logical properties must be argued separately.
Why MW-Pe exists
MW-Pe means Medium White Page Entity. It names the role of a blank page or white medium on which a narrative or represented reality appears. It is not an insult and does not mean the entity is weak. It records the narrowest claim supported by the evidence.
If the scans establish the medium role, classify that role. If other scans establish consciousness, ontological grounding, or a true contradiction, add those claims with separate arguments. One metaphor should not be forced to do five jobs at once.
The canvas relation may support a metafictional interpretation. A dependence relation may support an ontological interpretation. A genuine contradiction may support a dialetheic interpretation. A clear identity relation may support the move from an aspect to the whole. These claims can reinforce each other, but none substitutes for the others.
The Discord ruling
The argument on Discord was not that the Overvoid is automatically unimpressive. It was that the evidence must support each specific claim. Kerinj’s interpretation of Morrison’s canvas as a metafictional substratum is worth examining, but it does not automatically prove dialetheia or absolute transcendence in every possible sense.
For the benefit of the argument, Caveguy grants the Presence Tier 0-C as an absolute-ground classification. This is the highest PABC tier he is willing to grant on the argument presented so far. Tier 1-S is rejected because the required dialetheic connection has not been demonstrated. That verdict can change if the scans and reasoning establish the missing premises. It is not a declaration that the character could never qualify for anything higher.
So bring the scans, identify the exact contradiction, connect it to the same entity, explain the metaphysical reading, and show why the part-whole relation holds. If the evidence supports the stronger claim, it will survive scrutiny. If it doesn’t, no amount of philosophical name-dropping is going to save it.
Please stop treating “metafictional,” “ineffable,” “nondual,” “dialetheic,” and “absolute” as five different ways of saying “my character wins.” They are different claims. Define them, source them, connect them, then scale them. We can shitpost on Discord without turning the tiering system into a metaphysical word boiling soup of poo.
